A Brief History of the Dot in Art
October 4, 2025 to January 4, 2026
The new collection presentation at the Fondation Beyeler focuses on the dot—a central motif in the work of Yayoi Kusama, to whom the museum is dedicating a major retrospective at the same time. The exhibition traces the diverse meanings of the dot in art from the late 19th century to the present day. As the smallest pictorial element, it can be a puncture, a stain, a speck, a basic geometric concept, a sign, or a symbol – with both aesthetic and spiritual dimensions.
The richness of the dot is evident from Pointillism to Abstraction to Pop Art and contemporary art: as an abstract compositional element, as a figurative celestial body, as a point of pain, or as a point of light and focus that shapes visual perception. The presentation thus also highlights its sensual and human significance.
On display are works by Louise Bourgeois, Paul Cézanne, Max Ernst, Félix González-Torres, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse, Joan Mitchell, Joan Miró, Piet Mondrian, Claude Monet, Barnett Newman, Elizabeth Peyton, Pablo Picasso, Sigmar Polke, Jackson Pollock, Henri Rousseau, Doris Salcedo, Wolfgang Tillmans, Vincent van Gogh, and Andy Warhol.
Yayoi Kusama
October 12, 2025 to January 25, 2026
In fall 2025, the art museum will present the first comprehensive retrospective of the 70-year career of renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Iconic works will be on display, as well as early creations that have never before been seen in Europe. A highlight of the exhibition is one of the new Infinity Mirror Rooms, which fascinates with repetitive motifs and seemingly boundless visual worlds – a type of work that has made Kusama a key figure in contemporary art. The show highlights the range of artistic forms of expression that Kusama has worked with over the years: from painting and sculpture to installations and live performances to fashion and poetry.
Cezanne
January 25 to May 25, 2026
For the first time in its history, the Fondation Beyeler is dedicating a comprehensive solo exhibition to Paul Cézanne, a pioneer of modern art and a central artist in its collection. The focus is on the French painter's last and most influential creative phase. The presentation highlights the essential themes of his later years, including still lifes, portraits, landscapes, and scenes with bathers. With around 50 oil paintings and watercolors, the exhibition offers an impressive view of Cézanne's revolutionary approach to form, light, and color—qualities that have had a lasting influence on generations of artists.
Pierre Huyghe
May 24 to September 13, 2026
The Fondation Beyeler is presenting a comprehensive new exhibition by Pierre Huyghe, born in Paris in 1962, who is one of the most pioneering and influential artists of our time. Huyghe has conceived a specially developed presentation for the Fondation Beyeler, in which newly created works are juxtaposed with key works from recent years. Huyghe is known for his cross-genre projects that blur the boundaries between fiction and reality. His works navigate the tensions between different disciplines, combining cinematic, technological, digital, physical, and biological components to create open, changing situations in which new forms of perception and subjectivity can emerge. The exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in Pierre Huyghe's multi-layered and fascinating universe.
Ruth Asawa
October 18, 2026, to January 10, 2027
The first European retrospective of Ruth Asawa (1926–2013) impressively shows how the American artist with Japanese roots transformed the simplest materials into unique forms, dissolving the boundaries between abstraction and figuration, art and craft. Her diverse oeuvre includes wire and bronze sculptures, drawings, prints, paintings, and works in public spaces. After studying at the legendary Black Mountain College, Asawa developed a significant group of filigree wire sculptures and an equally distinctive body of drawings in San Francisco beginning in 1949. The exhibition highlights the interactions between her various forms of expression. From the late 1960s onwards, Asawa created numerous public commissions and had a lasting influence on art education in the Bay Area. The presentation offers a rare opportunity to become acquainted with the extensive oeuvre of this celebrated American artist in Europe for the first time. «Ruth Asawa» is being organized in partnership with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and is being realized by the Fondation Beyeler.
