Bern S-Bahn
Connecting regions, strengthening hubs, expanding services
The Bern S-Bahn connects the agglomeration and the various regions of the canton directly and at least every half hour with the centre of Bern, the hubs of Fribourg, Neuchâtel, Biel/Bienne, Solothurn, Burgdorf and Thun, and also with long-distance transport there. The S-Bahn is operated by RBS and BLS.
Expansion of the Bern S-Bahn
The report on the second partial supplement defines the medium- to long-term expansion targets for the S-Bahn service. The measures relating to services, rolling stock and infrastructure will be implemented in stages.
The target concept requires the expansion of Bern railway station, including a new RBS station and an expansion of SBB public facilities, as well as other major infrastructure measures planned as part of the federal government's 2025 Strategic Development Programme (STEP) expansion phase in the Bern hub. These measures will be implemented from 2025 onwards and will include separation structures to the west and east of Bern. Construction of these structures will require some longer-term restrictions on existing services.
The concept provides for quarter-hourly services in the core area of the network and has been incorporated into the STEP's 2025 and 2035 expansion phases. These will be revised as part of Transport '45.
The second partial supplement also includes the standardisation of S-Bahn rolling stock. This has largely been achieved since the introduction of the 2025 timetable. BLS now only uses modern, fully low-floor double-deck (MUTZ) and single-deck multiple units (MIKA, and NINA/Lötschberger on the S5/52 and S41/44) on the core network of the Bern S-Bahn.
