The expansion project
The Lötschberg Base Tunnel is a central element of Switzerland’s railway infrastructure. Since it entered service, it has provided a faster connection between the Swiss Plateau and Valais and strengthened rail freight transport on the north–south axis. Today, however, the approximately 35-kilometre-long tunnel can only be operated with two tracks on certain sections.
The expansion will increase capacity on the Lötschberg axis. This will benefit both passengers and freight transport. At the same time, it will create greater stability for rail traffic through the Alps.
Exhibition
The Lötschberg Base Tunnel connects more than just places. It stands for movement and transformation – through rock and technology, through past and future. The expansion of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel, which is being carried out while railway operations continue, represents an engineering challenge of exceptional scale. The expansion strengthens transalpine rail traffic, with the aim of shifting transport from road to rail.
The exhibition at the Info Centre makes visible what usually remains hidden: precise planning, modern construction technology, geological challenges and the engineering solutions behind them – as well as the people who make all of this possible. It sheds light on the history, objectives, construction progress, and future prospects of a project that connects regions and countries and has an impact far beyond the Alps – as part of climate-friendly mobility that reliably transports people and goods to their destinations.
The exhibition is divided into several thematic areas conceived as stations or rooms. Each station has a clear focus, an emotional or narrative introduction and answers key questions related to the project.
The completion of the tunnel will mark an important step toward efficient, reliable, and sustainable mobility through the Alps.
