“Alpe Veglia” Flower Trail
The themed trail in the most northerly nature reserve of the Piedmont (12.3 km, 4 hours)
Thanks to the diverse flora in this region of the Piedmont, you will encounter every conceivable shade of colour on this trail from Alpe Ciamporino to San Domenico. Luminous orange-red flowers, bright green shrubs and lemon-yellow natural beauties whose particular characteristics you can learn about thanks to the information plaques by the wayside.
Hiking trail
From Campione, the Flower Trail (F50) takes you to Balma, the gateway to Alpe Veglia. Along the way, information plaques provide interesting information about the local flora.
Together with Alpe Devero, Alpe Veglia forms a nature reserve nearly 9 hectares in size. It is the most northerly reserve in the Piedmont. Two large glacial valleys form a natural protection zone amidst the craggy peaks and deep ravines. The abundant flora, with larch forests and fragrant Alpine meadows, surround the trail. With a little luck, you can see Alpine ibexes, chamois and golden eagles.
From Balma, you follow the trail to Cornù, the main town of the uplands plain. Treat yourself to a break at one of the inns and enjoy a helping of polenta with cheese or meat. Your journey then continues on Trail F10 to the lime kiln and waterfall at Rio Frua. A mule track leads downhill to the bridge over the Cairasca mountain river, and from here to Casa del Parco-Porteia. The information hut offers dairy products to purchase, as well as glasses of cool lemonade for thirsty hikers.
Lastly, you follow the road to the “Cappella del Groppallo” and follow it on its steep descent until reaching the path leading back to Ponte Campo. From here, an asphalt road leads you back to San Domenico.
