Ice fishing on Oeschinen Lake at the Jungfrau-Aletsch Unesco World Heritage Site
Try your luck on the frozen Oeschinen Lake – a different kind of fishing experience!
The mountain lake above Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland lies in a hollow at an altitude of almost 1600 metres. Because it is surrounded on three sides by high mountains, it gets icy cold here in winter. The lake is covered by an ice layer 30–50 centimetres thick in winter. Ice fishing is possible on the lake from 1 January to around mid-March.
With the RegioExpress you travel from Bern directly to Kandersteg. You can reach Lake Oeschinen from the mountain station of the Oeschinensee gondola lift on foot in 25 minutes.

The last descent is at 5 pm. All ice fishers must then descend into the valley.
Provided the lake is accessible.
The thickness of the ice and the avalanche situation are monitored. Pay attention to the information signs at the mountain railway stations and at the Oeschinensee restaurant! They indicate whether and where it is possible to walk on the lake. Access at all times is at your own risk.
