Notes

Walking route

The gondola lift transports you comfortably to the starting point for your winter hike. You head first along the ridge of the Niederhorn toward Burgfeld. Enjoy the wonderful views. To your left stretches the Justis Valley, while to your right the Bernese Alps rise up above Lake Thun.

After a short and steep descent and then a similar ascent, you reach the Oberburgfeld mountain hut. Take some time to rest there and enjoy the open panoramic views towards the mountains known as the "Three Stars": the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

Heading down towards the valley, you reach the first groups of trees, walking through the snowy forest to arrive at Burgfeld Unterberg. A level track leads you on through the forest as far as the Chüematte. On fine Sundays, you can enjoy a snack at the mountain hut there.

From the Chüematte, the trail descends gently towards the valley in the Hohwald direction as far as the mountain station for the Hohwald ski lift. You continue through open Alpine meadows with a stunning view across Beatenberg, the Niesen mountain and part of Lake Thun. Take time to look back at the Niederhorn.

Before you know it, you reach Waldegg, a hamlet within the village of Beatenberg. From here, the Postbus will take you to the Beatenberg mountain railway station or to Interlaken West.

Hiking trail

The winter hiking trail is well prepared and regularly signposted from the Niederhorn gondola lift station onwards.

Walking time

3 hours / approx. 10 km

Food & drink

Why not visit the restaurant at the Berghaus Niederhorn? You can enjoy a meal in the bright open dining areas or on the lovely terrace of the Berghaus restaurant. Alternatively, you could stop off along the way, and call in at the Alp Chüematte mountain hut (open only on Sundays in good weather; for information phone +41 33 841 08 41) or in one of Beatenberg's inns.

Special remarks

The trail is not a sledge run and is therefore not checked in the evenings. Even so, many people do use their own sledges on the downhill sections. You should note that the trail does not offer guaranteed snow in its lower sections close to the village.
