“Come to the Emmental” – special exhibition

The exhibition illustrates the history of tourism in the Emmental from the first travellers to the valley to today’s wide range of facilities for tourists from all over the world. The Emmental was never one of the major tourist destinations – it was too remote, with no mountains and no lakes. In the 19th century, however, the region became a spa resort; as well as a great many local spas, there were also several formal spa facilities popular with guests from all over Switzerland. In the early 20th century, the Emmental attracted city dwellers in search of relaxation, good food and healthy air in an unspoilt landscape. On many of the hills around the valley, sanatoriums were built. Even today, the Emmental is most popular with lovers of sport and nature, who enjoy spending their holidays in the beautiful rolling landscape of the region.
