Baking rye bread in the Lötschental Valley
Baking rye bread together in the Blatten village oven is a unique experience for groups, clubs, companies and school trips.
Rye has been cultivated in Valais for centuries thanks to the canton’s unusually favourable conditions, including mountainous terrain, its high altitude and its extreme temperatures. Traditionally, the community baking oven was only fired up once a month in the Valais villages, including Blatten in the Lötschental Valley. As a result, it was necessary to bake a type of loaf that could be stored for several months – rye bread. If booked in advance, groups can bake a batch of traditional Valais rye bread in the village oven.
