Tobogganing fun at Oeschinen Lake
Loads of fun on one of the fastest toboggan runs in Switzerland.
Tobogganists who like things fast-paced can enjoy one of the fastest toboggan runs in Switzerland near Oeschinen Lake above Kandersteg. The eight-person panorama gondolas will take you from Kandersteg to the start of the toboggan run. When you’re up at Oeschinen Lake, you can take the “Unesco Ice Walk” – a brief winter hike on the frozen mountain lake. Plastic bobsleds should not be used for the descent down to Kandersteg. You can warm up at one of the restaurants near the mountain station or right by Oeschinen Lake.
As soon as the Oeschinensee freezes, hiking boots and rowing boats are exchanged for down jackets and sledges. The intact mountain world, which lies in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Jungfrau Aletsch, is reason enough to make an excursion to the Oeschinensee. If you combine your visit with a sleigh ride, the fun factor increases tenfold! However, the 3.5-kilometre toboggan run is not for the scared. Parts of the route are steep and provide the adrenalin kick.
In winter 2019/2020, due to the closure of the toboggan run to Kandersteg (danger of rockfall), no single rides will be available until further notice. Tobogganing to the lake is still possible.

The first part of the route between the mountain station and the Oeschinensee is comfortably flat and you can follow the sledges for the first 15 minutes. This is the perfect opportunity to experience the beauty of the landscape. Shortly before the Berghaus Oeschinensee you can toboggan a few hundred metres through the forest and you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the lake and the mountain scenery in the background. Only now does the actual descent begin. From Oeschinensee you have the choice between a faster and a more comfortable slope. Both run along the Oeschibach and unite in half of the descent. The faster route is really steep - braking with your feet is essential. However, the section can be driven at speed.
- The toboggan run is suitable for children aged 12 and over.
- The descent to Kandersteg on plastic bobs is not suitable.
- The toboggan run remains closed if there is a risk of avalanches or heavy icing.
In winter 2019/2020 no single rides are available due to the closure of the toboggan run to Kandersteg (danger of rockfall) until further notice. Tobogganing to the lake is still possible.
