Notes

Tell – a piece of Switzerland

Ueli Bichsel presents the joys of the simple folk and their suffering under the might of the tyrants. Visitors experience up close what it means to be oppressed and humiliated. But the “shepherd’s race”, as they are scathingly called by Bailiff Gessler, refuses to put up with it. Gertrude Stauffacher puts into words what many have been secretly feeling for a long time: “We must cast off this yoke of tyranny! We must free ourselves!” This fascinating play thus shows how a people rise up, how tragic individual fates and reprisals cannot stop the oppressed on their path to freedom. The power-hungry bailiffs must be conquered and driven away. Tell contributes greatly to this with his personal revenge on Gessler for an unprecedented humiliation, shooting his arrow into the centre of Gessler’s heart. With his deed (“That shot was Tell’s”) he sets the uprising in motion. He becomes a hero and symbol of free Switzerland.

130 amateur actors of all ages and dressed in authentic historic costumes take part in the open-air performance of Wilhelm Tell. The realistic backdrop with goats, cows and horses even offers enough space for action-packed riding scenes. In this theatre, the splendidly presented scenes of the Rütli Oath and the shooting of the apple are condensed into an exciting historic thriller. No theatre stage presents Swiss history with such proximity and authenticity as the Wilhelm Tell Open-Air Theatre in Interlaken.
