Visiting the Stockalper palace in Brig

Exciting guided tour of Switzerland’s largest baroque palace

In the 17th century, Kaspar Stockalper was the most ingenious early capitalist around. Stockalper traded in everything – including mercenaries, ores and salt – that might guarantee a profit. He documented every single transaction in his books in seven languages. The Stockalper Palace in Brig still bears testimony to his wealth, since at that time no other private citizen in Switzerland was able to build a larger palace than he did. You can visit the unique baroque palace as part of a fascinating tour.

Visit the exhibition "Passage Simplon":

The exhibition on the history of the Simplon Pass is certainly one of the main attractions of your visit to the Stockalper Palace. On over 2100 square feet the eventful history of this alpine crossing is examined from various historical perspectives. Learn about the construction of the transportation infrastructure foremost the Simplon tunnel itself, the first crossing of the Simplon Pass by air from Brig to Domodossola as well as the invention of a new pavement method by a physician and adventurer from Brig. One room of the exhibit is dedicated to one of the most fascinating figures in the history of the Valais: Kaspar von Stockalper himself. His rise to a key player in European mercantile ventures and his fall and exile to Italy will be examined.

The exhibition “passage Simplon” can be visited at the offical opening hours from the Palace from May to October. Free entrance.
