Working together for clean trains

Tips for behaving responsibly

Every day, numerous staff members work hard to ensure that our trains remain clean, comfortable and welcoming. But keeping the place clean is a shared responsibility: With a little consideration and by behaving appropriately, passengers too can help to ensure that everyone on the train feels comfortable.

National Clean-Up Day 2026

On Friday and Saturday, 18th/19th In September 2026, BLS AG will also be sending a strong, sustainable message against littering as part of the national Clean-Up Day 2026, organising clean-up campaigns on trains and at stations. Working together for a clean Switzerland.

Working through the night to keep trains clean

Once the last passengers have alighted, the cleaning teams get to work. Join our staff as they work through the night and find out what it takes to ensure the trains are clean and ready to run again the next morning.

    How much waste on BLS trains?

    Every year, we collect around the following on our trains: 

    • 400 tonnes of rubbish 
    • 10 tonnes of waste paper 

    Please help by: Please dispose of your rubbish properly and leave the area clean. This enables our cleaning teams to get the trains ready for their next journey more quickly.

    Cleanliness in figures

    Number of cleanings on BLS trains per year:  

    • 139,000 visual inspections – during which rubbish and coarse dirt are removed.  
    • 10,000 interim clean-ups carried out. 
    • 40,000 routine cleaning jobs carried out. 
    • 20,500 maintenance and clearance operations on the toilet and water systems.  

    Clean trains are no accident, but the result of many daily efforts.

    Keeping the train clean is a team effort

    To ensure you have a pleasant journey, a great deal of work goes on behind the scenes every day: 

    • Around 120 staff members are involved in vehicle services. 
    • Together, the teams clock up around 210,000 working hours a year. 
    • Cleaning takes place 365 days a year. 
    • Staff look after trains at 35 locations. 

    Behind every clean seat lies a daily effort.

Your contribution to clean trains

Small gestures, big impact. You can help by making these simple contributions:  

  • Please dispose of your rubbish in the bins provided. 
  • Please take newspapers and larger packaging with you and dispose of them properly. 
  • Please report any spilled liquids or heavy soiling to the train crew.  
  • Please leave your seat clean. 
  • Please be considerate of your fellow passengers. 

Together, we can ensure clean trains and a pleasant journey for everyone.
