FAQ – frequently asked questions

When should I purchase travel insurance?

Travel insurance is always a good idea, as unforeseen events can happen at any time. It protects you from financial losses if, for example, you are unable to start or continue a trip as planned due to illness, an accident, or other compelling reasons.

However, you may already have coverage through other providers. For example, certain credit cards include trip cancellation insurance if the trip was paid for with that card. Many health insurance plans also cover costs in the event of illness or an accident abroad.

We therefore recommend that you review your existing insurance policies. Consider whether they provide sufficient coverage in the event of trip cancellation or early trip termination.

What is the difference between travel insurance and trip cancellation insurance?

Cancellation insurance protects you before your trip begins. It covers the costs if you are unable to take your trip due to an unforeseen event—such as an illness or an accident. The insurance coverage ends when your trip begins.

Travel insurance, on the other hand, takes effect during your trip. It offers protection against unexpected events while you’re traveling, such as theft, lost luggage, illness, accidents, medical treatment costs, search and rescue costs, necessary repatriation, or a replacement trip.

In short:

  • Trip cancellation insurance = Protection before departure
  • Travel insurance = Protection during your trip

Does the insurance also cover travel within Switzerland?

Yes.

Is my luggage insured?

You can find the details of your insurance coverage in your insurance documents. There you can see in which cases your luggage is covered and up to what amount benefits are provided.

Are search and rescue costs covered?

Coverage for search and rescue costs depends on the benefits provided by your travel insurance policy.

At what point does annual insurance become worthwhile?

Annual travel insurance is often worth it if you take just two trips a year. In many cases, it’s more affordable than purchasing multiple individual policies and offers greater convenience: All trips taken within a year are automatically covered – including spontaneous weekend getaways or short trips.

Annual insurance is particularly attractive for couples and families. With a family plan, everyone living in the same household can be insured together. This allows you to benefit from comprehensive coverage at a particularly attractive value for money.

What is the latest date by which travel cancellation insurance can be purchased?

You can purchase your trip cancellation insurance at any time – regardless of whether it’s coverage for a single trip or annual travel insurance.
However, to ensure you can benefit from the trip cancellation insurance as soon as possible, we recommend that you purchase coverage shortly after booking your trip.

Important note: Pre-existing medical conditions or accidents that occurred before the insurance was purchased are not covered.

What documents do I need for a consultation?

Before you travel, check which insurance policies you already have and what they cover. This will help you avoid unnecessary duplicate coverage. Depending on your destination, it may be a good idea to get additional coverage.
