With the BLS RegioExpress Bern–Spiez–Kandersteg–Brig–Domodossola, you can travel south in comfort and with great views on the old Lötschberg mountain rout.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

On which route and on which trains is the Domodossola-Hit ticket valid?

The Domodossola-Hit is valid on the BLS RegioExpress trains (RE1) from Bern or from Thun/Spiez via Kandersteg-Goppenstein-Brig to Domodossola. The journey in the Lötschberg base tunnel is not included. Between Brig and Domodossola, the ticket is only valid on BLS RegioExpress trains and not on SBB EC, IC and IR connections. What happens if I am travelling on an SBB train with a Domodossola-Hit ticket?

If you are travelling between Spiez and Brig in the Lötschberg Base Tunnel or between Brig and Domodossola on the EC, IC or IR, you will need an additional ticket for these sections.

Can the journey be interrupted?

The Domodossola-Hit is a return ticket from Bern or Thun/Spiez via Kandersteg and Brig to Domodossola. The journey on this route can be interrupted if the direction of travel is maintained. Example: On the outward journey you can stop for a coffee break in Kandersteg or Brig, for example, or you can interrupt your journey at a stop on the RE1 on the return journey.

Can I also use the Domodossola-Hit ticket for a day trip from Domodossola to Bern and back?

No, the Domodossola-Hit tickets are only valid from Bern or Thun/Spiez to Domodossola and back.

What do I do if the BLS RE1 only runs as far as Spiez on the return journey?

The Domodossola Hit is not valid on SBB trains. In this case, you will need an additional ticket from Spiez to your destination.

Which is the last connection from Domodossola to Bern for which the Domodossola hit is valid?

The last through connection from Domodossola to Bern with the RE1 runs daily at 15.58 from Domodossola. Later connections only run to Spiez, you need an additional ticket from Spiez to your destination.

Do I need the Domodossola-Hit if I have a GA Travelcard or a Day Pass?

The GA Travelcard and the Day Pass are valid on the Bern - Spiez - Brig - Domodossola route. So, you don't need a Domodossola-Hit.

Domodossola-Hit tickets purchased online are personalised and non-transferable. These tickets must be presented either electronically on the smartphone or printed out on A4 paper and are only valid together with an official ID. Tickets purchased at a BLS Travel Centre are not personalised.

Can I transfer the tickets to another person?

Domodossola-Hit tickets purchased online are personalised and only valid with an official ID.

Can I show the Domodossola Hit electronically on my smartphone?

Yes, the Domodossola-Hit ticket can either be presented electronically on your smartphone or printed out on the train.

Can I reserve seats on the RE1?

No, seats cannot be reserved on the RE1 Bern-Spiez-Kandersteg-Brig-Domodossola services.

Can I also buy a Domodossola hit for my dog?

We recommend the national dog day pass at CHF 25.00, which makes travelling with your dog even cheaper.

Can I buy a class change en route (e.g. for the return journey?)

We recommend purchasing the Domodossola hit in 1st class. This means you benefit from increased travelling comfort throughout your journey. If you are in possession of a Domodossola-Hit in 2nd class and would like to use first class, you can buy a class upgrade from the normal range either online or from the train crew (minimum price CHF 10.00).

What services are included in the Domodossola-Hit ticket?

The Domodossola-Hit includes a return journey in one day on the BLS RE1 on the Lötschberg mountain line (via Kandersteg). No further services are included.

Places of interest

The car-free old town centre of Domodossola delights visitors with its many cultural and architectural highlights.

Piazza Mercato

At the heart of the picturesque town centre is the triangular market square, which was built in the classic Renaissance style. There is a lot going on here, especially during the traditional Saturday market. But you can also find fresh fruit and vegetables, fragrant herbs and regional cheeses and meat products here during the week. Enjoy an aperitif or espresso in one of the many pavement cafés and watch the colourful hustle and bustle on the piazza.

Collegiate church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio

The collegiate church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio reflects the history and spiritual significance of Domodossola. It was built in the 12th century in Romanesque style and is an impressive testimony to medieval architecture.
Between the entrance and apse, ten wooden miniatures depicting the ascent of the Sacro Monte Calvario can be seen on ten columns.

Sacro Monte Calvario

The mystical Sacro Monte Calvario, the pilgrimage site of Domodossola, rises high above the charming little town. The history of the pilgrimage site dates back to the 17th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Way of the Cross with life-size depictions of the Passion of Christ leads from the town centre up to the summit. 15 chapels and monumental statues line the 1.7-kilometre-long Way of the Cross and impressively depict the Passion of Christ.
At the top, there is a breathtaking view of Domodossola and the Val Grande.

Castello di Mattarella

Situated at the end of the pilgrimage route to Sacro Monte Calvario, this medieval castle offers an impressive view of Domodossola and the surrounding countryside. The Castello di Mattarella was built in the 13th century and has fulfilled various functions over the centuries: It served as a defence structure, a residence and is even the venue for cultural events today.

Shopping at its best

In addition to the popular Saturday market, Domodossola offers a variety of typical shops and small boutiques. Whether shoes, clothing, glasses, gifts or culinary delights, the shops in Domodossola offer a varied shopping experience. Stroll through the pretty alleyways and treat yourself to a break in one of the many street cafés.

Tip: It's best to plan your trip during the week or on a Sunday. Some shops are also open on Sundays and you can find fresh fruit and vegetables on the market square from Monday to Friday.
