New boatyard hall on Lake Thun

BLS is modernising its boat-maintenance activities. The 110-year-old boatyard hall on Lake Thun is dilapidated and needs to be demolished. BLS is planning to build a new hall on the same site.

A boatyard hall is essential to the navigation services on Lake Thun. This is because the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) has stipulated that BLS must place its boats in dry dock every four to six years and examine the underwater area of the hull. However, the construction of the new boatyard hall is also a sign of change at BLS Navigation: modern workplaces allow BLS to maintain its boats more efficiently.

The construction work on the new boatyard hall has already cleared some initial hurdles:

  • January 2015: Bern’s Cantonal Parliament agrees to BLS’s investment application for 12.8 million francs.
  • September 2015: BLS initiates the planning approval procedure with the FOT.

The old hall is demolished by the end of 2016. The first ships are to enter the new boatyard hall by the end of 2017.
