BLS Schifffahrt Berner Oberland
An anniversary celebrated by Schifffahrt Berner Oberland
«175 Years of Navigation on Lake Thun»
2010 is a very special year for Schifffahrt Berner Oberland – we can look back on 175 years of navigation on Lake Thun.
The Knechtenhofer brothers laid the cornerstone for cruising on Lake Thun in 1834. To drum up more business for their hotel, they ordered a steamship from the Cavé machine-builders in Paris. This steamship, the Bellevue, went on its maiden voyage on 31 July 1835.
In today’s short-lived time, it is not a matter of course that a company can look back on 175 years of existence. A pioneering spirit, the courage to confront change at all times, development, far-sightedness and a great deal of personal commitment have all contributed to the fact that a trip on Lake Thun remains a popular and emotional outing for young and old even in 2010. The region is inconceivable without navigation, which is strongly anchored here and has played a central part in the promotion of tourism and the conveyance of tourists right from the start.
All this is reason enough to acknowledge the last 175 years and to celebrate the jubilee with a variety of offers and festivities during the navigation season.
