Rosshäusern–Mauss: conversion to twin tracks
The capacity of the Berne-Neuchâtel line is inadequate as a consequence of its many single-track sections. The Swiss government defined the Berne-Neuchâtel line as part of Switzerland's high-speed connection, and funds were earmarked for the implementation of the necessary measures. In this context, the Rosshäusern-Mauss section was discovered to be a bottleneck for high-speed train operations. The cantons, too, support the extension of this section since it is also intended to serve regional transport.
A new, twin-track Rosshäusern Tunnel will save the expensive trouble of restoring the old tunnel (which was scheduled for some time after 2010) while at the same time straightening out the somewhat winding section.
Project objectives:
| To implement the high-speed connection concept (crossings in the section) | |
| To implement the service concepts of regional transport | |
| To increase the capacity of the Berne-Neuchâtel line | |
| To shorten journey times on the Berne-Neuchâtel line | |
| To enhance timetable stability on the Berne-Neuchâtel line |
The project involves...
| Construction of the new, twin-track Rosshäusern Tunnel with an optimised, shorter track profile (twin-track line Rosshäusern–Mauss) | |
| Adaptations to / construction of rail, control and catenary equipment | |
| Abolition of the existing route and renaturation of the rail technology | |
| Preservation/maintenance of existing tunnels |
