Gümmenen Viaduct

Promenade between Berne and Neuchâtel

From Berne, the RegioExpress travels to the cantonal capital of Neuchâtel at hourly intervals. In Gümmenen, the train crosses the River Saane on a spectacular viaduct.

Half-way between Berne and Neuchâtel – in Kerzers – the Papiliorama/Nocturama is well worth a visit. The avant-garde amphitheatre with a diameter of 40m and a height of up to 14m is host to several dozen plant species and 60 butterfly species from all the tropical regions of the world.

In Ins, you can catch the post bus to Erlach, from where you can visit St Peter's Island.

After a short journey through the Great Marsh, the train crosses the Zihl Canal on a striking steel bridge near Zihlbrücke. This canal joins up Lakes Neuchâtel and Biel – and you will now be in French-speaking territory.

There are countless things to discover in the City of Neuchâtel:

-

the stately castle high above the old town, with the prison tower (which offers a view of the lake and the town),

-

a stroll through the picturesque old town,

-

the Dürrenmatt Centre designed by Mario Botta, which offers an exhibition environment that caters for both literature and the visual arts,

-

a boat trip on Lake Neuchâtel,

-

a trip up to Chaumont, the vantage point high above the town, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Three-Lakes Region and the Alps.
