Frequently Asked Questions
Below, we have compiled answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) for you. You may well find an answer to your question here.
If you don’t, we may be able to extend this list with your help.
How long is my ticket valid?
Tickets for routes of up to 115km in length are only valid on the day on which they have been issued. With longer distances, return tickets are valid for 10 days. Separate rules apply within the various fare alliances.
Left your season ticket at home?
If you have left your personal season ticket at home, you can present it together with the form "Passengers without a valid ticket" at the counter within 10 days after the trip and pay a processing fee of CHF 5.00. This arrangement does not apply to Junior Cards, Grandchildren's Cards and “Gleis 7” cards. If you leave any of these cards at home, you will always have to buy a ticket.
Travelling without a valid ticket
Only in the RegioExpress trains (Berne -) Spiez - Brig, Berne - Langnau - Lucerne and Interlaken - Spiez - Zweisimmen are tickets sold in the train, but with a surcharge of CHF 10.00. For changes of class, no surcharge is payable in these trains apart from the additional charge for 1st class.
All the other train and bus routes are subject to the self-service ticket validation system. |
Passengers who are unable to present a valid ticket (2nd class ticket in 1st class compartment, multiple-fare card not validated, etc.) will have to pay a surcharge of CHF 80.00 if they pay immediately or CHF 100.00 if they pay by postal order later.
Passengers who misuse or forge tickets and supply false personal data will have to pay high fees, and BLS reserves the right to institute criminal proceedings.
Dogs
Dogs in containers travel free of charge as long as they are of a shoulder height up to 0.3m. A half-fare 2nd class ticket will have to be purchased for bigger dogs.
Bicycles on the train
Bicycles may be taken on the train provided that sufficient space is available. Bicycles must not be taken on any BLS buses.
In principle, a full-fare ticket must be purchased for a bicycle. Bicycle day tickets are available from CHF 15.00. Holders of annual season tickets, half-fare cards and Libero Cards only pay for a half-fare ticket or CHF 10.00 for a reduced bicycle day ticket.
Children’s bicycles for children under 6 and bicycles of children with Junior Cards can travel free of charge.
